You Oughta Know about having a license for your students. Yep. A license. Identification card. ID. Whatever you'd like to call it. I got this idea in Vegas this summer and cannot remember who it came from (I really want to say it was either Kim Adsit or Deedee Wills... AHHH I cannot remember). It is seriously GENIUS. Here's what you need...
- every student needs an ID card
- iPad/phone/iPad/some device that your students can use to take a picture with
(yes, I chose the weirdest picture of me that I could find lol - didn't want to show my kids so I showed mine)
When your students are at centers, Daily 5, math workshops and they complete their work - they get their ID, sit it next to their COMPLETED work and take a picture. It is much easier if everyone uses the same device. Then, they return the device to the same spot so another student can take a picture of their completed work. You would really have to emphasize that the work MUST be completed before a picture can be taken. My kids are LOVING this. There is only Word Work out for them at the moment that has completed work involved and a couple of recording sheets are in two of their BUILD math workshop buckets, but every child has finished their work. GENIUS idea.

Then, you don't have 20 firsties or kinders coming up to you saying "I'm finished!!!" with their paper dangling in your face. Seriously people. This works wonders. You can check it when you get a free second or at the end of the day and quickly flip through the pictures. This would also be great to keep pictures for conference times. You could note that Sam is still writing his three and 5 backwards or that Jen is having a hard time recognizing the letter M. You could essentially have a digital portfolio for each child without doing ANY work other than sorting them by student. It would be easy to figure out because you've got a picture next to the work.
